Let’s face it, J.Crew’s 90s catalogs were beyond iconic. While everyone raves about the effortless outfits, no matter the season, I can’t help but admire the simplistic beauty looks that are pretty much the desired vibe today.
The idea for today’s newsletter was inspired by ’s post yesterday, Still Want to Dress Like a 1992 J.Crew Catalog Model? She republished a letter she wrote a year ago and showed her readers exactly how to replicate the brands summer looks.
So, I wanted to tap some experts about how someone can replicate the beauty looks from the same campaigns—because they’re truly the epitome of summer 2025.
Makeup
When it comes to makeup, it’s all about simplicity. Makeup artist Natalie Dresher says “Getting an effortless, chic look is going to be very in this summer.” To achieve this, you’ll want to start by “applying a tinted sunscreen with your fingers, and spot conceal.”
Blush will be your BFF this summer. “Applying a cheek/lip stain onto the cheeks and lips for a flush of color will add the perfect pop of color,” Dresher says.
Don’t forget the highlighter—a crucial part to that natural, summer glow. “Applying a cream highlight to the inner corner of the eyes, tops of the cheek bones, and the cupids bow will accentuate everyone's most fabulous bone structure and features,” Dresher says. “Top this off with fluffed up brows and a few coats of a brown mascara and you have the perfect J-Crew magazine-esque look.”
Overall, minimalism is key to achieve this look. “Keeping the products minimal and multi purpose will definitely help achieve this simplistic but effective look. Using minimal powder products will keep it fresh, dewy and reminiscent of a perfect summer glow.”
Hair
With the heat of summer being super overwhelming at some points, braids and hair accessories are the way to go. Think: loose french braids, messy (but not too messy) buns, pony tails, and don’t forget to throw on your baseball cap to protect your skin from the sun and hide your hair after a dip in the ocean.
Oh, and maybe bandanas will make a comeback? They’re a super easy way to conceal your hair (and protect your scalp from the sun) while looking effortless and chic.
